MGW’s Member Organizer Institute

Strong members build strong unions

The mission of MGW’s Member Organizer Institute is to empower members to get involved in their own shops, plan and execute collective actions, run aggressive contract campaigns and win big. The 10-week institute provides regular training, coaching and support to fellows as they build organizing skills and track their progress.

What MOI fellows learn

MOI fellows should leave the program with a better understanding of:

  • How to set goals and use metrics to track union participation and build worker power

  • How to have effective organizing conversations that move co-workers to take action

  • How to build solidarity in the workplace and our communities so that we can fight for change

Apply to be an MOI fellow

MOI fellows are paid $28 an hour and must commit to working five hours a week for a total of 50 hours over a 10-week term. The 50-hour requirement includes 10 hours (one hour a week) of group training and guidance via Zoom.

Applications for the next session of the MOI are currently closed.

Members who are interested in building organizing skills beyond the MOI’s 10-week curriculum can also join the NewsGuild-CWA’s general member organizing program, which brings together Guild activists from different locals across the country. In the general program, members attend monthly meetings and are placed in “pods” for small group check-ins once a month to set goals and track skill development. Members can sign up here. For more information, contact a leader in your unit or an MGW staff member.
