Workers at Pop-Up Productions win union recognition

Just weeks after the workers of Pop-Up/California Sunday Guild went public on May 11 with their organizing campaign, management agreed to voluntarily recognize their union.

The bargaining unit, consisting of roughly two dozen employees at Pop-Up Magazine and California Sunday Magazine, will join Media Guild of the West, TNG-CWA Local 39213.

The group organized around issues such as job security, transparency, career growth and compensation. Though the union drive began long before the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis added to the urgency of the campaign.

“Our agreement lays the foundation for moving forward,”the Pop-Up/California Sunday Guild said in a statement on June 5. “We have no doubt there will be more forthright conversations to come. We also have no doubt that everyone — our management and our union — is committed to the process of collective bargaining.”
